HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TRAINING WITH MILE 27?
I starting in 2018 so i am just starting my 7th running season with Mile 27
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTERESTED IN THE SPORT?
My background has been racket sports growing up in the UK. When moving to Hong Kong, like most people new to town I joined a dragonboat team then took up outrigger canoeing. In the off season I would do a handful of trail races and do fairly OK. A few folks encouraged me to take up trail running more seriously as they thought I would do well. In 2018 I reached out to the Gone Running – Joint Dynamics trail team to see if they wanted to take a punt on me and from there I was recommended to take in touch with Andy at Mile 27 to see if he would take me on.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RACE SO FAR?
I would probably say going back to do North Downs Way 100 miler for the second time. With the stomach causing havoc first time round, it was nice to go back and put in a solid performance taking 75 minutes off the previous time ( Editors NOTE – and taking back to back wins ! )
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM A RACE?
Taking the 03:40 ferry from Lantau Island after completing Hong Kong Four Trails Ulra Challenge. We all had a busy, epic, 3 day adventure. Leaving with my crew and friends/support together as a gang was super special to me.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ULTRAMARATHON ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR ?
Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge was by far the biggest adventure, although didn’t quite do it justice due to carrying an injury. Good results in Oxfam Trailwalker including the Mixed team record also up there.
WHAT IS ON YOUR RACING BUCKETLIST?
Western States 100 Endurance race, I feel this race would suit me quite well. I would also like to compete at Tarawera in New Zeland, as well as explore racing in China.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM ULTRAMARATHONS? WHAT HAVE THEY TAUGHT YOU ABOUT LIFE AND YOURSELF?
Ultramarathons have taught me that working hard will bring you good results. Like anything in life, you will face obstacles and barriers you will need to navigate through.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF TRAINING?
You can’t beat the slight nervousness before tackling a solid speed or hill session. Generally speaking, the endorphins you get from getting outside for your daily run sets you up for the rest of day.
HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE BENEFITED FROM TRAINING WITH MILE 27?
Having a deep dive into the workout stats such as speed / watts of each rep is always fascinating when analyzing with your own feedback of sleep /stress levels that day. After six years with Andy, the personal approach to how you are feeling after a great / poor result helps to know how to focus for the next.
WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU WOULD GIVE A FELLOW ATHLETE TO HELP THEM ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE OF RUNNING AN ULTRA MORE?
Be diligent but also realistic in both your training and race expectations. What you put in you will get out, don’t expect miracles.
WHAT IS YOUR NEXT RACE/CHALLENGE ?
For the first time in 3 years a healthy season! Combining a good mix of short, medium and longer race distances.
